Our proud VicRoads herritage
Our first major road construction project commenced in 2011 and took 3 years to complete. We designed and managed every aspect of the works inhouse as part of the North East Maintenance Alliance (NEMA).
The Omeo Highway was the first declared highway in the state of Victoria back in 1914. The original track was used to connect north east Victoria to eastern parts of Gippsland, via horseback over the great dividing range.
Ironically, it was then the last highway in Victoria to be finally upgraded with a fully sealed surface completed exactly 100 years later in 2014.
The project had a lot of help from long term VicRoads staff who had been trained how to build things properly. Many of our road workers started out with the Country Roads Board (CRB) before it was abolished in 1983. It was then replaced by RCA, and finally the RTA in 1989 which went on to be branded as VicRoads.

* custom design using 'min and max' cross sections
* planning permits
* vegetation removal permits
* EPBC permit approvals
* cultural heritage inductions & training
* quality controls including SWMS, ITPs
* long term dry hire agreements with CAT
* bridge widening to move equipment
* onsite rock quarrying & mobile rock crushing
* helicopter felling of fire burn tree's
* drainage design & waterway upgrades
* road widening, landslip repairs and retaining walls
* major cuttings with rock blasting & rock hammers
* grade line corrections & subgrade improvements
* granular pavement construction
* graded aggregate seal (GAS) trial
* reverse standard strip line marking trial
* alpine line marking & snow clearing
* motorcycle safety treatments, including over 500 individual Cams
* monitoring of endangered species, such as the spotted tree frog
* new sightings of the endangered 'spotted tail quoll' upon removal of dirt road surface.
This project was a testament to the showcasing the skills and experience of a by gone era of VicRoads and CRB "dirt doctors". These staff spent most of their working lives building and maintaining roads to highest quality for the benefit of all other Victorian's.
